The ‘Gotovina Excuse’. (2005-12-13)

The President of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia, Sonja Biserko, said that the arrest of Croatian general Ante Gotovina makes ‘Serbia alone in the region’. The position of the Government regarding the interplay with the ICTY has ‘changed significantly’. In her statement for BETA news agency, Biserko said, ‘The arrest of Gotovina disturbed the balance between Zagreb and Belgrade, for Serbia will not be able to use Gotovina as an ‘excuse’ any longer. Serbia and the Republic of Srpska will be subjected to new pressure’. She considers that the report on SCG interplay with the Hague Tribunal that Chief ICTY Prosecutor Del Ponte will submit next week to the UN Security Council. She added, that the present arrest was an excellent outcome for Croatia, since it will open more space for its EU integrations. But also, it’s good news for the whole region.
